Anka’s background

Anka is a very affectionate dog. She follows me everywhere and absorbs all the physical contact I can give. She’s really come a long way from when I first met her in Germany. In Germany she was a kennel dog who lived in a rural area. She was a home bred dog. Her owner took good care of her but I don’t think she was very socialized to crowds or urban settings. When I first saw her at the local Christmas festival, she was nervous about the crowd. Then we went back to her house and took her for a walk. I could tell she was very intelligent and biddable. We drove back to our hotel just across the border in the Netherlands. We took her into the hotel and she was very quiet. She didn’t make a sound. Then she saw a full length mirror in the room. She went over to the mirror and saw her reflection. She strained to see herself and gave a big smile. It was as though she was developing an awareness of herself. She was fascinated and kept going back to the mirror. It was like the mirror scene in the Marx Brother’s movie. Who is that good looking dog in the window?

She made the transition from being a German kennel dog to an American house dog easily. Housebreaking went quickly. The only trouble is that she is obsessed with our Turkish Angora cats. Oh well.

I was amazed how quickly she learned English. No problems and it is as though raised her from the very beginning. She understands everything. It took only one time to get the point of the drive through at McDonald’s. Double Cheeseburger, please.

Supreme Court inanities

So I read a transcript  of the oral argument in School District v. Redding. What was Breyer thinking? He was so cavalier as to the discussion of strip searches – equating it to changing for gym class. I remember hating changing in gym class. The gym teacher would make us strip and go through the shower. We had to stand there naked getting our names checked off a sheet. This is one reason we need more diversity on the court. I can just see Breyer reliving his prep school days. Yuck.

Love is in the air

Sorry for not posting. I’ve been busy writing a brief but I’m done now.

Anka just came into season. I talked to Megan Judge (owner of the stud dog) and everything is lined up. Megan is on her way to the Seiger show outside of Chicago. This will be a great time to do the breeding – if all goes well, we will have puppies in mid July. The weather will be good.

German Shepherds are extremely talented dogs. They can perform a wide variety of tasks from police work to guiding the blind. Here’s a story about a German Shepherd doing theatrical work.

This is Stoney - Stoney is Anka's best friend

Well, now that spring is here I am eager to for Anka to have a litter of puppies. I’ve narrowed the choice of stud dogs – go to hausjuris.com to see the choices. Anka is doing well but has shed out her coat recently. That’s a sign she will be coming into heat soon. Somehow though I know the optimal time for breeding will come at an inconvenient time – probably when I am scheduled to be in Los Angeles for my daughter’s graduation. She will probably have to stay at the kennel. She be unhappy about the process but the end justifies the means.

Either Anka or Elo goes with me to the barn each day. Elo especially loves swimming in Western Run while Anka prefers to stay with Fannie and me. Elo is a chow hound who will eat anything – Anka is the opposite, very choosey preferring omelets, home made chicken soup, ground turkey. The other day Elo got into Fannie (my horse) hoof supplement. He ate about three pounds of it. Needless to say, I knew I was in trouble when I say Elo drooling and looking uncomfortable. Let’s just say for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
